Q:     Why is water so important?

A:     Our body is made up of about 75% water, brain 85% water and blood is normally 94% water, when fully hydrated.  Water is vital to our health as the human body is entirely dependent on its many complicated functions for its survival. Without water, our body cannot function as it was designed.


Q:     what happens when we don’t drink enough water?

A:     When the human body is dehydrated, when we don’t drink enough water, it begins to redistribute and regulate the amount of available water. This available water is rationed and used where needed based on its functional importance. Our brain always takes priority, so areas of less importance begin to suffer, and symptoms start appearing in your health.

As time passes and the body becomes more and more dehydrated, a threshold is reached, and the system[s] in question can no longer carry out its function in the body.


Q:     How much water do we need?

A:     Our body eliminates 2.5 liters of water a day, so the minimum we must drink each day is this. If you exercise, perspire heavily, or drink caffeine (a diuretic), you need to drink even more. Rule of thumb is 3 cups of water per cup of caffeine. 

So the minimum is 6-8 glasses of water a day. Ideally, we should drink half of our body weight in ounces per day. For example, a person weighing 160 lbs should drink 80 ounces or 10 cups.

Clear urine is an excellent indicator of proper hydration. The more urine that is produced, the more easily the body keeps its interior alkaline. 


Q:     When should we drink?

A:     Before meals. Ideally 30 minutes before eating, to prepare the digestive tract. If you are feeling thirsty, drink even with food.
